What is the TX BM Community Truck?
We are a group of Texas-based Burning Man participants who share space on a commercial freight truck to haul our gear to and from Black Rock City. By pooling resources, we save money, reduce our environmental footprint, and avoid the hassle of towing trailers across the desert.
How much does it cost?
You pay based on the cubic feet you reserve. The per-cubic-foot rate is set each season and published on the Purchasing Space page. Payment is due by the deadline shown on your reservation — your spot is not confirmed until paid.
How do I sign up?
See How It Works for the full step-by-step process.
What size containers should I use?
Standard 27-gallon totes (roughly 6 cu ft each) are the most popular option. Bike boxes are also required for all bikes for both legs of the trip. All containers must be sturdy, stackable, clearly labeled on every side, and zip-tied shut. No garbage bags, loose items, or open-top bins.
Can I ship my bicycle?
Yes! Pack your bike in a proper bike box (available free from most bike shops). Secure all loose parts inside the box, pad the frame, and label the box on every side. Bike boxes count toward your reserved cubic footage, and we no longer assume these are 7 cubic feet each so you will need to obtain a box that fits your bike and measure it.
Can I bring an e-bike with the lithium ion battery in it?
NO. E-bike is fine, battery must make its way to playa some other way. It's too big of a risk for everyone's belongings on the truck, and a hazmat risk if we are pulled over by DOT that has a MAJOR FINE associated with it (which you are liable for if it this happens and it is your e-bike battery).
Do I have to load and unload my own stuff?
Yes. You (or a designated friend) must be present at the scheduled load-in in Texas and at the unload on playa. The same applies for the return trip. If you cannot be there, you must arrange a trustworthy proxy and notify us in advance. The Designee form can be found in your profile or in your confirmation email after you've registered.
What if I need to cancel my reservation?
All booked space is final sale — no refunds. If you need to cancel, contact us as soon as possible so we can release your space to the waitlist. The sooner you let us know, the more likely someone else can use the spot.
Is there a waitlist?
If the truck fills up, new registrations are placed on a waitlist in the order received. If space opens up (due to cancellations or a larger truck), we'll notify you by email and give you a window to confirm and pay.
What happens if the truck is searched or delayed?
We reserve the right to open and inspect any container. If a prohibited item is found, the person responsible bears all associated costs — including DOT fines (up to $186,000 per violation) and delay charges. Please review the Prohibited Items list carefully.
Can I ship food, water, or ice?
TL;DR-- Depends, no, and no, respectively. PLEASE REFER TO PACKING PAGE FOR ALL PACKING INFO. Non-perishable, sealed food and small beverages are generally fine. Do not ship water — it is extremely heavy and eats into your cubic footage. Buy water and other liquids at a closer supply point or arrange delivery on playa instead. No loose ice, dry ice, or perishable items — the truck is not refrigerated and takes multiple days to arrive. Propane and other compressed gases are also prohibited.
Where does the truck depart from and arrive?
Load-in locations and times are published on the City Schedule page once confirmed. We typically have load-in stops in the major Texas metros (Austin, Houston, Dallas). On playa, unload location will be communicated before the event.
Can I load in from one city and unload in another (i.e. Austin, Dallas)
Yes! Simply uncheck the box at registration that says "I'm unloading in the same city" and select your preferred unloading city. You will want to have applicable color-coded tape for your items for your unload city so that you can update your labels on playa for the return journey.
Where will the truck be located on playa?
We don't disclose the truck locations for load in or load out, on or off playa, to people outside the community. Once you register and pay, you will get a confirmation email with all relevant information for your logistics and any subsequent updates to those logistics.
Can i get a discount if i only use the truck one way?
No. The space you pay for your is yours both directions, whether or not you use it is up to you.
